Powar Shines On TV Debut

Unbeaten Gully Powar impressed on his Sky Sports debut with a dominant points win over Engel Gomez at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton on Boxxer’s ‘Wolves At the Door’ under card.

The 21-year-old from Wolverhampton demonstrated why his coach Richie Carter has been singing his praises with some excellent body shots early in the opening round.

Gomez, who is from Nicaragua but now fights out of Slovakia has been in with a lot of talented boxers including Frankie Stringer and Peter McGrail and knows how to survive. He looked frustrated complaining to the referee claiming the punches were low but his protests were rightly dismissed.

Powar was switching well from head to body with his left-hand in particular finding home with a big shot in the third that stunned his 23-year-old opponent. In the fourth Gomez started to dance along the ropes as he tried to buy some time, but Powar kept landing point scoring blows, finishing the fight strongly.

The score 40-36 was a formality and fully deserved, Gomez will be back next week at the York Hall and Gully Powar now (7-0) will look to build on this exposure and take his career up a level with some big fights in 2024.
