Connor Goodchild is determined to compete with the big-hitters in the welterweight division as his progression continues.
He goes again at the Eastside Rooms, on Woodcock Street in Birmingham, headlining a Friday fight night that’s set for September 30.
Unbeaten Brummie Goodchild, from Kings Norton, stands at 3-0 and has been pulling out all of the steps to enhance his experience, as evidenced by a trip to Mexico.
In the training camp prior to his last contest, a points success over MJ Hall in June, saw him travel over 5,000 miles to Tijuana, sampling sparring with seasoned Mexican fighters.
The 24-year-old returned to England and put his preparation to good use against Hall, coming out on top through a points landslide, the scoreline 40-36.
Goodchild turned over with the same verdict over Paul Cummings, in February, before April’s ring assignment saw him land a maiden TKO, as a pro, dismantling Sultan Ahmet in three.
He racked up 40 bouts, at amateur level, and amassed 30 wins for the Pat Benson Boxing Academy, with father-and-son duo Spencer McCracken Snr and Jnr now in his corner.
Goodchild has been backed by sponsors Vehicle Protection Solutions (Solihull), Dainty & Co Ltd (Nechells) and Rose Oak Investments (Coventry).
He said: “My last opponent was a tough nut to crack, I wanted to keep up the KO ratio and I think, because of that, maybe I was loading up a bit too much.
“But I thought I boxed well, I worked the body a lot better and sunk my shots in. I used to win my amateur fights on the jab, so it’s nice to mix it up.
“I haven’t really stepped out of camp, since then, I’m always in the gym and ticking over. I’ve been in Birmingham instead of Mexico this time, though, so that’s been different!
“The sparring was unbelievable in Mexico, nearly every session was against top prospects who were knockout artists. I’d love to go back over there.
“There are good lads to spar with here, too, but I feel like I might have to go around sparring a lot more, to get all of the different styles that are out there.
“I feel like I’m improving and coming on leaps and bounds, in my career, and I think this will be my last four-rounder, before going up to six. For now, all I want is another win.
“I think of myself as a contender. I’d fight for a Midlands title tomorrow – that’s how confident I am in myself, but I understand that’s down the line. It’s just what I want to go for first.
“I box because I love it, but you have to set goals for yourself and I want to leave a legacy, from boxing, for my two children to be proud of. I have my bucket list!”
