Owen Wants To Get Busy

Macauley Owen is determined to get busy again after getting back to full fitness during a five-month spell on the sidelines.

He’s in action again when BCB Promotions’ next offering at the H Suite arrives in Edgbaston, Birmingham, with a Friday fight night set for September 23.

Fight dates have fallen by the wayside, over that time, allowing him to have niggling problems with his arm and chin rectified.

He was due to box at the Eastside Rooms, at the end of July, but that was curtailed due to the injuries. His opponent was due to be Delmar Thomas, in an intriguing tussle.

Thomas’ pro record stood at 5-2 then, with the contest due to a step up for Owen but, ultimately, their clash never took place.

Owen’s last ring outing was in April, earning a second straight four-round points whitewash over erstwhile journeyman Liam Richards, through a 40-36 scoreline.

The same verdict was recorded against Constantin Radoi in October, which came less than a month after his pro debut, where he stopped Michael Horabin in a round.

The 25-year-old lightweight is from Telford and represented Donnington Boxing Club, as an amateur, amassing 25 wins from 45 bouts.

Owen later boxed for Coventry University, while completing an undergraduate degree in sports science and a masters in sports nutrition.

He became a national champion, too, in the Clubs for Young People (CYP) Championships and is now trained by Shiney Singh, at the MLSS Community Hub gym in Bloxwich.

Owen said: “With all of the call-offs, just to be on another show feels like a blessing. There’s been a lot of frustration, but I’ve picked up the pieces and cracked on.

“I’ve been ticking over and stayed in shape, but you wonder what you’re doing it for when you don’t end up fighting, particularly when you’re getting fitter and stronger.

“I’ve had a couple of injuries, too, to make things worse. I had a problem with my arm, since before my debut, from when I hyper-extended it on the pads.

“My chin got cut in my second pro fight, it opened up again in sparring. They both kept flaring up but, thankfully, it’s all sorted now.

“It’s been five months since I’ve been in the ring, but I thought I did well in my last performance. I was a lot heavier than I wanted to be.

“I felt like I’d improved from my previous one, when I rushed my punches a bit too much. I was patient in breaking him down and looking for openings.

“I was a bit of a head-hunter, as an amateur, but we’ve been working on body shots and my punch selection has come along a lot. It’s all about learning for me.

“The pro game feels like home to me, but one stoppage in three I’m not happy with. If I get the chance to knock the guy out, I’ll take it.”

Tickets for the H Suite bill are available, priced at £40 standard or £75 VIP ringside with buffet, directly from the boxers or by visiting myfighttickets.com.
