Liam Davies is happy to keep on doing the rounds as he takes his West Midlands road-show back to Walsall next month.
Davies is eyeing up a hat-trick
of victories since turning pro as he features on
BCB Promotions’ ‘Showtime’ at Walsall Town Hall on Saturday May 11.
The super bantamweight prospect is from Donnington, a hamlet in the
Shropshire town of Telford, but has boxed around the region since turning over.
He made his debut in Birmingham, outpointing busy Georgian Khvicha Gigolashvili by 40-36 points whitewash at the Holiday Inn Queensway last December.
His first action of 2019 came in February – also at Walsall Town Hall – where he bashed around Bulgaria’s Stefan Slavchev in another four-rounder.
Davies found some dynamite in his fists to twice put down Slavchev, who was relieved to see the final bell after using his guile to get there.
A resounding 40-34 over the distance result, with two extra points scored for the knockdowns, saw the second-generation fighter catch the eye.
He’s the son of Tristan Davies, who featured 15 times as a pro between 2004 and 2009 and won the Midlands lightweight title.
His eldest offspring racked up a stellar amateur career, claiming an England Schoolboys title in 2010 and twice reaching the national finals of the England Elite competition.
He decided to punch for pay after his 100th amateur contest, recording 78 wins and representing England at youth level, boxing out of his father’s Donnington gym.
He said: “There was a good crowd at the Town Hall for me last time and I put on a decent performance. I put the guy down twice, chinned him and then with a body shot, but he was tough.
“I was pleased that I stayed calm, I could have thrown 100 punches and hoped the referee stopped it, but I’d rather box in a measured way.
“Stoppages will come, in the end, and I was composed all the way through. I got about the best result possible, the only thing I didn’t get was the knockout!
“I felt like it was an improvement, I did alright on my debut but I wasn’t completely pleased. I’d had a bit of a cold beforehand, so I just wanted to get the job done.
“I knew what to expect, the second time, even though it was at a different venue. I can take that into May 11th when I’m back at the Town Hall.
“I haven’t really stopped training, I’m always in the gym but I’m so much better with a target and a date when I’m next out, which I’ve had so far.
“I keep getting better and I know I’ve got the potential to get to a good place in boxing. I want to get the experience behind me, perhaps even have a six-rounder by the end of the year.
“I’ve had fantastic support, taking 120 to Birmingham and then 140 to Walsall, so hopefully it will be similar numbers again this time.
“I want to keep those fans with me throughout my career, together we can put Telford on the boxing map and give the people of Donnington something to talk about.”
Ricky Summers, with new trainer Spencer McCracken in his corner for the first time, features elsewhere on the Town Hall card.
A reigning area champion, James Beech Jr, keeps busy with the super featherweight crown in the bag. The unbeaten hometown hero hails from nearby Bloxwich.
Kelcie Ball, from Dordon in Warwickshire, is also in action for his first outing as a member of the BCB stable.
Tommy Loach, from West Bromwich, will back in the ring after a year out through injury and still has his own undefeated record to protect.
Two debutants, Amy Timlin and Ruben Campbell, complete the line-up. Timlin travels from Southam in Warwickshire to turn over whilst Campbell, from Dudley, will join the same super lightweight ranks where dad Ray ‘Raza’ Campbell featured himself in the early 1990s.
